Sheffield United vs Newcastle United match preview

It’s been a massive week for Newcastle United, so can they conclude it with a crucial victory in the Steel City?

On Tuesday night, the Toon Army returned to Champions League action after two decades away, somehow holding A.C. Milan to a goalless draw at San Siro.

I Rossoneri ended the evening with an xG figure of 2.34, to Newcastle’s 0.18, but the only statistic that matters is the fact it ended scoreless at Stadio Giuseppe Meazza.

Back in the Premier League, Eddie Howe’s team ended a streak of three successive defeats last time out by, just about, beating Brentford at St James’ Park, with Callum Wilson’s penalty the difference.

So, with huge cup games against Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain to come, the Magpies will feel this one is must win.

As for Sheffield United, they still have just one point to their name, following last weekend’s dramatic defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Paul Heckingbottom’s team held Everton to a 2-2 draw in their most-recent home fixture, Cameron Archer bagging a brace, but this is still the only point Sheffield United have to their name thus far.

Here, following a 1-0 victory behind-closed-doors in 2021, the Blades are targeting back-to-back home wins over Newcastle for the first time since 1976.

The Magpies have won the other six of their last seven encounters, with that trend set to continue at Bramall Lane.

Sheffield United team news

Oli McBurnie’s red card deep into stoppage time last weekend means he is suspended.

As a result, Bénie Traoré will return in attack, partnering Cameron Archer, who marked his debut with a double against Everton earlier this month.

James McAtee made his second debut for the club at Spurs, having rejoined on loan from Man City.

Predicted XI (3-5-2): Foderingham; Ahmedhodžić, Egan, Robinson; Bogle, McAtee, Hamer, Souza, Thomas; Archer, Traoré.

Newcastle United team news

With games coming thick and fast, Eddie Howe will continue to rotate his XI.

They were without Joe Willock and Joelinton for the mid-week trip to Milan, so Sean Longstaff will continue in midfield.

Jacob Murphy was the surprise inclusion for that one, but Miguel Almirón is likely to return here, with Alexander Isak leading the line, chosen over Callum Wilson.

Anthony Gordon has been booked four times this season, the joint-most of any Premier League player, so a yellow card here would rule him out of Newcastle’s clash with Burnley next Saturday.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Pope, Trippier, Schär, Botman, Burn; Guimarães, Tonali, S Longstaff; Almirón, Isak, Gordon.
