Newcastle United vs Burnley match preview

This week could hardly have gone any better for Newcastle United, so will the feel-good factor on Tyneside continue?

Last Sunday, the Magpies hammered Sheffield United 8-0 at Bramall Lane, recording the club’s joint-second biggest victory of all-time, only surpassed by a 13-0 drubbing of Newport 77 years ago.

Sean Longstaff, Dan Burn, Sven Botman, Callum Wilson, Anthony Gordon, Miguel Almirón, Bruno Guimarães and Alexander Isak all scoring in the Steel City.

This made it the first time since 1989 that eight different players netted for the same team in a English top-flight match.

Then, on Wednesday night, Eddie Howe’s side knocked out tournament favourites Manchester City in the Carabao Cup, with Isak the match-winner at St James’ Park, tapping home shortly after half time.

Next up, the Toon Army welcomed Paris Saint-Germain to the North East on Wednesday, so will they go into that huge clash following another victory.

This is really clutching at straws for the Clarets, who only have one point to their name, following last Saturday night’s 1-0 home reverse against Manchester United.

Vincent Kompany’s team had held Nottingham Forest to a 1-1 draw the previous Monday, but the Championship champions still look out of their depth back in the Premier League.

Given this, Tuesday’s Carabao Cup win was much needed, to lift morale if nothing else.

Sander Berge, Jacob Bruun Larsen, Dara O’Shea and Wilson Odobert all on target as the Clarets smashed fourth-tier Salford City at Moor Lane.

Newcastle beat Burnley home-and-away in 2021/22, but haven’t enjoyed three successive victories in this fixture for 68 years.

This fact is surely about to change, with Newcastle overwhelming favourites to pick up three points.

Newcastle United team news

Joelinton is back while Joe Willock remains sidelined, so 17 year old Lewis Miley made his senior debut on Wednesday, starting before being taken off at half time.

Summer signings Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall also debuted in the win over Manchester City, while forgotten men Paul Dummett and Jamaal Lascelles formed an unlikely but immense centre-back pairing.

Here, Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Fabian Schär, Bruno Guimarães, Miguel Almirón and Anthony Gordon will all return to the XI, while Callum Wilson could get the nod up front, rotated in for Alexander Isak.

Harvey Barnes suffered a nasty ankle injury at Bramall Lane, so now faces months on the sidelines.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Pope, Trippier, Schär, Botman, Burn; Guimarães, Tonali, S Longstaff; Almirón, Wilson, Gordon.

Burnley team news

Vincent Kompany heavily rotated for Tuesday’s demolition of Salford but, given the result, those fringe players may have given him something to think about.

Winger Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson is unlikely to feature, having hobbled off early against Manchester United.

Lyle Foster, who’s their top-scorer in the league, remains suspended, following his red card at the City Ground.

Predicted XI (4-4-2): Trafford; Roberts, Beyer, Al-Dakhil, Taylor; Cullen, Brownhill, Ramsey, Koleosho; Bruun Larsen, Amdouni.
