Liverpool vs West Ham United match preview

These two teams were both in Europa League action on Thursday night, but it’s all about crucial Premier League points on Merseyside.

Liverpool maintained their winning streak by coming from a goal down to defeat LASK in mid-week.

Darwin Núñez converted a penalty, before Luis Díaz and then Mohamed Salah were both on target in a 3-1 victory at Raiffeisen Arena.

This made it five victories on the spin for Jürgen Klopp’s team, who began the Premier League season with a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge, before claiming four straight victories subsequently.

Will that sequence continue here?

Similarly, West Ham also fought back from 1-0 down to prevail 3-1 in the Europa League, eventually defeating TSC Bačka Topola at the London Stadium.

Back in the Premier League, just like Liverpool, David Moyes’ men drew on the opening weekend and then won three on the spin, before eventually seeing their unbeaten record ended by Manchester City last Saturday.

For Moyes personally, he’s still never won a Premier League away game against Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea or Manchester United; it’s 70 attempts and counting.

The Hammers’ most-recent victory at Anfield came in 2015, losing each of their last six visits, so will that trend continue?

Liverpool team news

Jarell Quansah made his Premier League debut at Molineux last weekend, but Virgil van Dijk will start at centre-back this time, as he did in Linz, having served his two-match suspension.

Caoimhín Kelleher, Kostas Tsimikas, Stefan Bajčetić, Wataru Endō, Ryan Gravenberch and Ben Doak were all rotated into the XI for the Europa League, while Trent Alexander-Arnold and Thiago are out injured.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Alisson; Gomez, van Dijk, Konaté, Robertson; Jones, Mac Allister, Szoboszlai; Salah, Jota, Gakpo.

West Ham United team news

Similarly, David Moyes gave starts to Łukasz Fabiański, Konstantinos Mavropanos, Aaron Cresswell, Thilo Kehrer, Mohammed Kudus and Danny Ings for the mid-week visit for TSC.

Tomáš Souček could keep his place in a stodgy-looking midfield, although Kudus certainly staked his claim for a starting spot in the Europa League.

In attack, Jarrod Bowen has scored in each of West Ham’s first three away games this season, the first Hammers player to achieve this since Victor Watson in 1930.

Predicted XI (4-5-1): Areola; Coufal, Zouma, Aguerd, Emerson; Ward-Prowse, Álvarez, Souček, Paquetá, Bowen; Antonio.
