Arsenal vs Tottenham Hotspur match preview

Both of these two North London rivals are flying and full of confidence right now, but only one set of supporters can ever be happy whenever the Premier League’s fiercest derby rolls around.

Arsenal have been in action twice since Spurs’ last outing, with the Gunners marking their Champions League return on Wednesday night by swatting aside PSV Eindhoven.

Bukayo Saka, Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Jesus and Martin Ødegaard all on target in that routine 4-0 victory.

In the Premier League meantime, it’s four wins out of five for Mikel Arteta’s team, after they ended their Goodison Park hoodoo last Sunday, with Trossard the match-winner on Merseyside.

Now, having achieved a derby double last season, can Arsenal secure three consecutive league wins over Tottenham for the first time in 34 years?

This though certainly won’t be easy, given that Tottenham also have 13 points to their name, making it four wins on the spin in incredibly dramatic circumstances last weekend.

This is the latest any team has ever been losing a Premier League match and still gone onto win, breaking Spurs’ own record set at Leicester in January 2022.

The vibes surrounding Ange Postecoglou’s revolution in N17 could hardly be better, although this would only intensify further if he could lead Spurs to just their third away league win in this fixture in the last 38 years.

This though is the Premier League fixture with the highest % of home wins; in the last seven seasons, the North London derby has procued ten home wins, three draws and just a solitary victory for the away side.

So, will Arsenal make home advantage count, or can Postecoglou’s side claim a statement win?

Arsenal team news

David Raya made his Arsenal debut last Sunday, before also donning the gloves against PSV, so the Spaniard appears to be the new number one, displacing Aaron Ramsdale.

In attack, Gabriel Martinelli hobbled off at Goodison, an injury that isn’t a serious as first feared, but Leandro Trossard will continue on the left-wing for now, aiming to score in a third match on the spin.

After starting for the first time this season on Wednesday, Gabriel Jesus will continue to lead the line, while Kai Havertz is also expected to start, chosen over Fábio Vieira, who did get the nod at Everton.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Raya; White, Saliba, Gabriel, Zinchenko; Rice, Havertz, Ødegaard; Saka, Jesus, Trossard.

Tottenham Hotspur team news

Despite scoring against Sheffield United, Richarlison is set to remain a substitute, with Son Heung-min leading the line for a third successive match.

14 of Spurs’ last 24 North London derby goals have been scored by Harry Kane, so could James Maddison be the man to step forward and fill this void?

Elsewhere in attack, Brennan Johnson made his debut last weekend, so could he come in for Manor Solomon?

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Vicario; Porro, Romero, van de Ven, Udogie; Sarr, Bissouma, Kuluševski, Maddison, Johnson; Son Heung-min.
