Wolverhampton Wanderers vs Manchester City match preview

Will Manchester City’s 100% start to the new Premier League season continue?

Last weekend, early goals from Phil Foden and then Erling Braut Håland saw the Citizens swat aside Nottingham Forest at the Etihad, despite having Rodri sent off mere seconds after the interval.

That’s now six wins out of six for Pep Guardiola’s team, the first time Manchester City have ever achieved this at the start of a top division campaign.

Although, on Wednesday night, the Sky Blues were beaten for the first time this season, dumped out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle United, defeated 1-0 at St James’ Park.

This is Man City’s earliest EFL Cup exit since 2012, although Guardiola didn’t seem too bothered, prioritising this trip the Black County.

That’s bad news for Wolverhampton Wanderers, who also exited the League Cup this week, doing so in calamitous circumstances.

Wolves led 2-0 at Portman Road after just 15 minutes on Tuesday, Hwang Hee-chan and Toti scoring, only for Ipswich Town to pull off a remarkable turnaround, prevailing 3-2.

Back in the Premier League, Gary O’Neil’s side avoided defeat for only the second time last weekend, drawing 1-1 with Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.

Despite seeing Jean-Ricner Bellegarde sent off in the first half, Pedro Neto broke the deadlock in spectacular fashion and had Wolves on course for a vital victory.

However, 15 minutes later, Matt Doherty was penalised for a frankly ludicrous handball, with the Hatters converting the subsequent spot-kick, so 1-1 it finished.

Wolves famously beat Manchester City twice in three months in 2019 although since then, they’ve lost all six encounters, conceding 19 times and scoring only three.

So, a comfortable victory for the champions seems likely at Molineux.

Wolverhampton Wanderers team news

Gary O’Neil rotated heavily for Tuesday’s trip to Suffolk, handing starts to David Bentley, Jonny, Toti, Tommy Doyle and Pablo Sarabia.

Here, he’ll largely revert to the team that draw with Luton last weekend, albeit without Jean-Ricner Bellegarde following his red card; Boubacar Traoré is likely to come into midfield.

Matheus Cunha is likely to keep his place up front, chosen over the only Wolves player to score a winning goal this season Saša Kalajdžić.

Predicted XI (4-5-1): José Sá; Semedo, Dawson, Kilman, Aït-Nouri; Lemina, B Traoré, Gomes, Hwang Hee-chan, Neto; Cunha.

Manchester City team news

Rodri remains suspended, while John Stones and Kevin De Bruyne are injured long-term.

Ederson, Kyle Walker, Rúben Dias and Erling Braut Håland didn’t get off the bench on Wednesday, while Bernardo Silva didn’t even make the trip to Tyneside.

Mateo Kovačić is fit again, so he and Matheus Nunes, against his old club, are likely to start at the base of midfield.

Kalvin Phillips, who made just his fifth Manchester City start, in any competition, in mid-week, probably didn’t do enough to keep his place, even in Rodri’s absence.

Predicted XI (4-1-4-1): Ederson; Walker, Rúben Dias, Akanji, Gvardiol; Kovačić, Nunes, Doku, Álvarez, Foden; Håland.
